BMAA Safety day and fly in

Fly in and BMAA safety day Sywell April 17th Cirrus Suite, Aviator Hotel, Sywell Aerodrome The British Microlight Aircraft Association will be holding it's first Safety Day on Saturday 17th April 2010 at Sywell Aerodrome, Northampton. The timetable is likely to be: 11.00 Opening and general introductions, Geoff Weighell and Kim Taylor, BMAA 11.05 BMAA safety issues and objectives, accident/incidents 2008-09, the dangers of flying in IMC, Club and school safety officer network - Kim Taylor, BMAA 11.30 Human factors, pre flight planning and preparation, NOTAM gathering, use of ATC services including the use of D+D etc - Geoff Weighell/Kim Taylor, BMAA 12.00 The work of General Aviation Safety Council by their Chief Executive, Mike O'Donaghue including microlight aviation-related subjects 12.30 A presentation by the head of General Aviation at the CAA, Chris Finnigan (microlight pilot and ex BMAA CEO) to include CAA safety issues with particular relevance to microlight flying 1300-1400 lunch break allowing for informal discussion and a chance to experience the "CAA Disorientation Chair" to simulate loss of spatial awareness encountered whilst flying in IMC 14.00 Pre-flight aircraft checks, rigging errors, PFLs and EFATOs, common handling errors, type conversions and currency - a BMAA Instructor 14.30 Practical navigation advice in general, not limited to airspace infringements, including avoidance of CFIT and terrain routing - Mark Batin (microlight pilot) from the Royal Institute of Navigation 15.00 Presentation by NATS entitled "Infringements Updates and Aware GPS" including time for questions and a free draw for an "Aware" GPS unit 15.45 Review of the day, general questions and close - Kim Taylor and Geoff Weighell, BMAA In addition to their presentation, RIN will also provide a stand with navigation information and Chris Finnigan will have some CAA hand out material as well as his presentation. In addition to their presentation, NATS have very kindly offered to provide an "Aware" GPS device which we will offer as a prize in a FREE draw for all those attending on the day. Other static displays are also being planned. Sywell is an ideal location with full aviation and refreshment facilities. There are half price landing fees on the day and plenty of parking if you have to drive if the weather is bad. With some top-notch speakers; we guarantee you will go away wiser than when you arrived! This is a first for the BMAA and deserves our full support. Similar Safety Days are planned for other locations around the country in the future.
